Mission of the Roy Hyatt Environmental Center
Our mission is to assist students in mastering science concepts and processes through the integration of science disciplines in studying the environment. This year, our goal is to provide hands-on, inquiry-based programs designed for second and fifth grade students, their teachers and families.

Description of the Roy Hyatt Environmental Center
Since 1968, the Environmental Center that Roy Hyatt envisioned, has reached several generations of Escambia County students. RHEC sits on 120 acres of pine forest, including a butterfly garden, nature trails, and wetlands with endangered plant species. click here to read more...

The Roy Hyatt Environmental Center, in partnership with the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation, Inc. received an IMPACT100 grant in the Environment, Recreation and Historical Preservation category for the amount of $107,500.

This grant will allow RHEC the ability to construct an Outdoor Education Classroom (OEC) with a concrete slab floor, electricity, fans, plumbing, a wash tub style sink for clean-up, and weather resistant vinyl curtains for use in rain or cold conditions.

There will also be a small storage facility adjacent to the OEC.  A new pond ecology program will be developed and equipment will be purchased to use in this new program.

There will be 2,000 feet of additional boardwalk built which will connect the two existing boardwalks and forming one large loop out into the pitcher plant bog and back.

RHEC will also purchase equipment to enhance existing programs and replace very old equipment.  Funding from this grant will help to more effectively educate over 12,000 environmental stewards per year, which alone is quite an impact, but that is not all!

The impact is much larger than that!  It will help instill environmental literacy to our visitors which in turn will impact the future of our citizens, our community, and our environment as our youth are our future decision makers.

This grant funds the RHEC building project and refurbishes outdated equipment. It does not fund the FMW Audubon Naturalist Teacher who works there with the Escambia County teacher, Molly O'Connor.

FMWAS is committed to funding the Naturalist position through our fundraising efforts and your donations.

To help in this endeavor which doubles the RHEC reach to thousands more local schoolchildren, you may send a check to FMWAS, P.O. Box 17484, Pensacola, FL 32522, or contact any boardmember for other opportunities to support the Environmental Center programs that FMWAS sponsors. Thank you!
